ACMD Challenge Seminar - Lymphoedema
Lymphoedema uncovered
About this Event

Lymphoedema is a blockage in the lymphatic system that results in the accumulation of excessive amounts of fluid, causing painful and uncomfortable swelling, usually in the arm or leg.

Secondary lymphoedema may occur following treatment for cancer, if the lymphatic system is damaged.

Approximately 20 per cent  of survivors from breast, gynaecological and prostate cancer, or melanoma will experience this condition following treatment.

Join the ACMD Challenge Seminar discussion to hear:

  • What is lymphoedema?
  • How is it  detected and managed?
  • Possible opportunities for how technology may improve the quality of life for lymphoedema patients.

Challenge Seminar Speakers

  • Associate Professor Liz Dylke – President of the Australasian Lymphology Association
  • Dr Debbie Geyer – Vice-President – Lymphoedema Association Australia
  • Professor Neil Piller – Director of the Lymphoedema Clinical Research Unit
  • Associate Professor Ramin Shayan – Plastic Surgeon, St Vincent’s Hospital (Public and Private)Co-Head, Lymphatic Biology Lab; and Director of O’Brien Institute Department, SVI.

Date: Tuesday 14 March 2023

Time: 2:00pm – 3:00pm

“We seek opportunities to improve the quality of life for lymphoedema patients and the management of this chronic condition – the most significant cancer treatment side effect”

Associate Professor Ramin Shayan

Challenge Seminar Speakers

Associate Professor Liz Dylke
President
A/Prof Liz Dylke mid-career researcher with a growing international reputation in the field of the assessment and diagnosis of lymphoedema. She has over 50 peer reviewed publications and two book chapters. Her research is widely cited internationally, particularly in the US and UK and she has active and growing collaborations in China, India, the UK and Belgium. A/Prof Dylke is also the head of a vibrant and active research group, which aims to develop wide ranging skills necessary for research students and early career researchers into the future in the areas of lymphatic diseases, cancer rehabilitation and prevention of skin infections. Furthermore, A/Prof Dylke is the President of the Australasian Lymphology Association, the peak body for lymphoedema practitioners in Australia and New Zealand, reflecting her knowledge and influence in the oedema community.
Dr Debbie Geyer
Vice-President
Debbie Geyer is a general practitioner in Sydney. Debbie completed a lymphoedema training course to become a Level 1 Accredited Lymphoedema Practitioner, where she focuses more on diagnosis, support and referral rather than physical elements of treatment. Debbie was diagnosed with primary lymphoedema at age 20 and has various members of her family experiencing primary or secondary lymphoedema too. She brings a unique viewpoint, being a medical practitioner and also being someone living with lymphoedema. Debbie is currently Medical Advisor to the Australasian Lymphology Association and has previously been their Consumer Advisor. In 2016, at the Darwin Conference, Debbie was awarded the Australasian Lymphology Association Award for Raising Awareness of Lymphoedema in the Community. She is Vice-President - Lymphoedema Association Australia, which is a national patient group.
Professor Neil Piller
Director
Neil is Director of the Lymphoedema Clinical Research Unit (Flinders Centre for Innovation in Cancer), a board member of the Australasian College of Phlebology and SA Health Compression Garment Scheme, a member of the Australasian Lymphoedema Association Research Committee and the Scientific committee of Vasculab. Neil is Clinical Sciences Editor (Journal of Lymphoedema), Australasian Editor (Lymphatic Research/Biology) and an Editorial Board member of Lymphology and Phlebology. Neil is patron of the Australian Lipoedema Support Group, the Lymphoedema Association of South Australia and the Lymphoedema Association of Australia. Neil is committed to improving outcomes by ensuring treatment strategies are targeted/and sequenced. Neil does this by helping clinicians deliver what is optimal, with a patient’s functional and personal needs in mind. Together with a holistic multi-disciplinary approach acknowledging the importance/roles of the lymphatics and vascular systems based on good science but acknowledging patient’s individuality and needs.
Associate Professor Ramin Shayan
Plastic Surgeon. Co-Head, Lymphatic Biology Lab and Director of O’Brien Institute Department.
Ramin is an academic plastic and reconstructive surgeon working at St Vincent’s public and private hospitals, The Victorian Plastic surgery Unit, and at Epworth, Cabrini and Alfred Hospitals. He completed his medical degree, and a PhD in the molecular biology of the lymphatic system, cancer spread and lymphoedema, at the University of Melbourne. Ramin has special clinical research interests in microsurgery, lymphoedema, radiation injury and fat grafting, and is a director of The O'Brien Institute, Department, SVI, Associate Director (clinical) of SVI and co-heads labs investigating tissue engineering and regenerative medicine solutions to the molecular science behind diseases of cancer survivorship including lymphoedema, radiation injury and also lipoedema. Ramin has a dedicated practice to lymphoedema, having performed nearly over 500 microsurgical reconstructions for lymphoedema (including lymphatic bypass microsurgery, free lymph node transfer and lymphatic free flaps), and hundreds of debulking surgeries to enhance mobility, form and quality of life for lymphoedema patients. Ramin is an editor of seven international academic journals and has published over 60 academic papers including in journals Nature, Cancer Cell and Nature Reviews.
