Seeing is Believing: Microscopy Capabilities at ACMD and BOMP
Modern biology is increasingly driven by our ability to visualise biological processes at the right scale and resolution. Using real-life applications, this seminar explores what researchers have already achieved with the microscopy capabilities available across the Aikenhead Centre for Medical Discovery (ACMD) and the Biological Optical Microscopy Platform (BOMP). These include widefield, confocal and live-cell imaging, light sheet, high content screening and super-resolution microscopy, with the strengths and typical applications of each. Recent research examples will show how experimental design, sample preparation and image analysis workflows shape data quality and biological insight, and we will outline how researchers can access these capabilities.
About the Speakers: Kalyan Shobhana is the Microscopy Core Lead at the Aikenhead Centre for Medical Discovery (ACMD) and a member of the Biological Optical Microscopy Platform (BOMP). She is the primary contact for researchers seeking access to the ACMD imaging suite and collaborates with research groups to develop tailored imaging strategies, advanced microscopy workflows, and automated image analysis solutions. Dr Paul McMillan manages BOMP at the University of Melbourne, supporting more than 350 researchers across 19 advanced imaging systems and bringing over 20 years of experience in fluorescence and super-resolution microscopy. Together, they support cutting-edge biomedical research and have contributed to studies published in leading journals including Nature Immunology, Nature Communications, and Cell Reports.
