Taking brain implants from idea to clinical device: Translational lessons from a founder’s perspective
We’re excited to launch the first ACMD Research Seminar Series, a new forum open to all researchers across the ACMD ecosystem. Our inaugural seminar features an exceptional founder-clinician perspective with Professor Mark Cook AO
With Professor Mark Cook AO

Professor Cook is:

  • The Sir John Eccles Chair of Medicine and Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Melbourne
  • Director of Clinical Neurosciences at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne
  • An internationally recognised neurologist and translational leader
  • Appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2023 for distinguished service to neurological medicine and epilepsy research

Mark has led multiple first-in-human studies of implantable systems for seizure prediction and intracranial drug delivery – work that culminated in the Australian med-tech success story Epiminder, which recently completed a successful IPO following the development of a world-first FDA-authorised neural implant for epilepsy.

This session will explore what it truly takes to move deep science through clinical validation, regulation, capital and scale –  from the perspective of someone who has built it end-to-end.
