Pancreatic cancer implant project

Background

Pancreatic cancer has a low survival rate, with a cumulative five-year survival rate of only 6.8%. The use of chemotherapies using systematically administered drugs face a challenging environment due to two main factors:

1) the limited local vasculature at the tumor site and

2) the dense tumour architecture that restrict the distribution of drugs within the tumor.

ACMD Project

This project is a collaboration between Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute (NSW), University of Wollongong and Swinburne University of Technology.

At ACMD, Dr. Lilith Caballero Aguilar and Prof. Simon Moulton (Swinburne University of Technology) are developing novel approaches to encapsulate the chemotherapeutics which are implantable structures aiming to locally delivery chemotherapeutic agents to reduce pancreatic tumors for future surgical resection.
